Guy who is consistently, verifiably wrong about politics and yet is somehow listened to by the Democratic party establishment.

The other day he said something about how grocery stores always used to play boring old people music in his childhood, but now that he’s middle aged they all play cool songs from his youth. Like my understanding is this was said with full sincerity, and that it was cool that grocery stores played better music rather than grasping that they merely play music that middle aged people enjoy. I really believe it’s sincere too because if it’s not that would make it easily the funniest and most clever post that man has ever made, and I can’t think of another instance of him being either funny or clever.

unrelatedly, I would like uninformed* guesses on the following topics:

  • when were guns invented?
  • when did guns, like, start being a major part of military battles?
  • when was plate armor invented?
  • what years would you describe as “medieval”? what are some examples of medieval events or medieval historical figures?

for context, I’m trying to calibrate the level of historical knowledge for a fictional character who doesn’t really know very much beyond, like, “went to school”

answers in spoilers please so you don’t cross-contaminate

* by which I mean “give me your best guess, but if you have no idea, that is actively a positive”

Summary

I think I heard the first being 13th century, or thereabouts.

16th century.

Let’s go with 6th century

700s to 1300s

Vlad the Impaler, misc. conquests and infighting I know nothing about

  1. Ugh. Ok so i know gunpowder was invented pretty early on, if we’re going actual guns… were they used in the u.s. revolutionary war? God. I should know this. My inclination is to say they werent around when conquistadors arrived in mexico. Theres the whole ‘shot heard around the world’ and also right to bear arms though.

Gonna say like 1700

  1. Probably shortly thereafter? I guess you have guns for hunting. You definitely need like the infrastructure for it which puts a hard cap of like 1650, but we’ll say like 1750

  2. Lol if i know. 1300? Thats my estimate of the time ‘guy i imagine wearing plate armor’ is from

  3. Uhhhhhhhh. Castles, fiefdoms, joan of arc, Astrolabes are renaissance and thus later, generally a good bit of religion? I thiiink medieval means middle ages so also the plague? And arabic scientific advancements

Im guessing like 800-1200??? Really no clue.

yeah no fair. I do really particularly dislike him. I dont know if you know who Lakshya Jain is but I like him even less

because while Yglesias is an annoying centrist punditry guy who just has bad opinions, Jain is a “actually I just Follow The Data :tm: and advocate the democratic party do simply whatever the data says is the most popular thing in all cases”. Which is a terrible idea, even if it were true, and its not true, he ignores the data whenever it supports everying but the most WelcomeFest Centrist ThirdWay slop imaginable.
