Yeah the cost of entry for crypto is much lower on top of the regulation being much laxer or just non-existent. You create MarissaCoin but you get a few insiders involved that either have large internet followings or direct connections to those people. You mint a bunch of the coins and divvy a large share of the supply amongst all the insiders. The insiders then start hyping the coin up and holding their coins. Dumb money (literally anyone buying into random crypto projects) then starts buying thinking they’re getting in early and can sell when the dump starts. This repeats for awhile to give folks fomo as the price starts to skyrocket and looks like it’s going to the moon which feeds into the next round of hyping the coin up. Then someone savvy in the insiders figures that now is the time to sell, and tells all of the insiders to start dumping. Dumb money continues to buy thinking there’s a bigger idiot just around the corner, and realizes too late they’re just exit liquidity. They then get big mad at whichever insider fucked them over.

The insiders are all much wealthier though and weather the storm of negative comments. Time passes and the insiders basically face no real consequences. Someone like Logan Paul or Jimmy “Mr. Beast” Donaldson can continue churning out their sludge while denying any serious wrongdoing or knowledge it was a pump/dump, often times alleging that they too were scammed (despite profiting from it immensely). Only a fraction of their audience is aware of this whole situation though, and not nearly enough to meaningfully affect them or their larger clout (at least in the short-term).

If you want to pump stocks on the other, you actually have to buy a ton of the stock. It’s extremely unlikely that you can acquire the same kind of large supply distributed across a small number of insiders who all know to hold until it’s time to dump. Then, you have to do the same sort of hyping thing, but instead of it being this new fancy thing that’s highly volatile and that some people have stumbled into or grifted their way into making a lot of money off of, it’s stocks which are usually talked about in terms of long-term benefits. If you fail, you have a much higher liability because the stocks your selling were likely a lot more than practically free. If you succeed, the SEC is probably going to open an investigation because you likely had to effectively publicly broadcast your scheme to pump it. There was the GameStop guy whose name I can’t remember who stumbled into pumping a stock because he sincerely believed it was undervalued, and it became a meme. They still investigated his ass.

The best villains are ones that you can run into during your daily life.
You’re too existential a villain to truly hate.

I remember RoaringKitty returned a few months ago and bought a bunch of GameStop and Chewy, and it led E*TRADE to consider banning him given how much his announcement affected those stocks.

These 2 are so weird cuz the former has such a long and complicated skeleton closet, while the latter keeps it more overt.

Logan could record you an unsettling forest with corpses, sell scam products, do crypto rug pulls, yet be unaffected because he’s ultra rich. I think I saw the same happen to Collin ukulele girl, she returned and still does videos but the internet forgot about her.

Mr. Beast heavily, heavily promotes the appearance of philanthropy because he cares extremely deeply about his own brand image and understands that telling people he’ll donate money to have a tree planted for each like on a video is a useful lever for getting people to actually click the like button. Those sorts of metrics can then be converted into better sponsorship deals or promotions or help convince Amazon to make Squid Game in real life (based on a show where the rich make desperate poor people compete in a bloodsport for their amusement, and the fact he thinks it’s fine as long as you don’t actually kill people is all you really need to know to understand the guy does not give a shit about other human beings).
