i think the issue is some opinions the people who hold them see as political opinions when in actuality they are explicit statements about the way in which you view other people

like if somebody wants to argue that charter schools are good I’ll point out the many reasons I believe them to be net negative

but I’m not going to think worse of that person

but if they start arguing we should bring back racial segregation in schools (which is genuinely only a small hop from supporting charter schools and really not an extreme example) I’m no longer able to view them in the same light for some hypothetical follow-up conversation

even if they assure me that’s only a political opinion and therefore I shouldn’t judge them personally for holding it
