Quick search had the most conservative estimate at 1-2 million tons of plastic (not all trash, just plastic) entering the ocean annually, and best case is 2 billion pounds. 30 million pounds sounds like a lot, but when compared to the actual scope of the problem, seems woefully inefficient. Like there has to be more efficient solutions or we’re fucked.
Just checking the price of tree seeds real quick, I found a 2lb bag (evidently 200+) oak tree seeds for $16.50. That works out to about $0.08 per seed. If it’s just planting i.e. putting the seed in the ground and doing nothing else, and they aren’t getting a better rate per seed, then we can say the person planting the seed is making a decent wage. However, the tree needs to time to grow, and it has to survive for a long time. Unless the planting was done by a tree farm (which would be an incredibly bleak way to technically fulfill the request), it may not really be all that effective either.
Doing what they said on the tin is fine, but it doesn’t make it a good charity. If I donate $100 to feed hungry children, and one charity uses that money to feed 2 children and the other feeds 50, both have technically done what was advertised, but one of them, at least on the surface, appears to be a better charity. Most viewers of Mr. Beast and Mark Rober aren’t going to know other charities to compare Team Seas/Trees to, and don’t know that their money could be spent better elsewhere (which may or may not be true, but I don’t actually know firsthand that’s the case because I haven’t looked into it). My point is that it does not necessarily make it a good thing that they did what they advertised if that came at the expense of putting that money into a more effective charity.

it wasn’t “plant trees” it was “plant 20 million trees”
it wasn’t “clean up the ocean” it was “remove 30 million pounds of trash from the ocean”
if you choose to donate your $100 to the “feed two children” charity then that’s not some surprise hidden outcome that could have been better elsewhere
