Is there a sane reason for the markets to be rebounding due to the news that tariffs are paused for 90 days except the ones for China which is now 125%? Isn’t that going to just wipe out a significant portion of retail?

My understanding is that the market believes the tariff thing to be Trump’s way of negotiating, and given that basically all major countries save for China have acquiesced and opened negotiations, he’s gotten what he wants.
I have differing thoughts - I’m expecting the end of that 90-day delay to be another game of chicken and the China thing to escalate further - but the market’s just glad everything isn’t going to implode.

I don’t think there’s any sort of strategizing going on and the China tariffs alone are devastating. The uncertainty and volatility is going to also be significantly damaging to small businesses that are trying to break into international markets even if they somehow no part of their supply chain involves China (which seems… extraordinarily unlikely).
