Awaiting the inevitable moment Trump starts beefing with Jerome Powell, and the markets really start looking like “Bad Apple”.

so I sold off a bunch of stocks and have to pay capital gains which was not included in the previous $800. also it says I’m paying capital gains taxes on a much larger figure than anticipated. like I assumed it would charge me 15% on the difference of what I paid for the assets vs what I sold them for, but I got charged 15% on 90% of the value of the sale??? I fucking hate taxes

Capital gains tax should just be on the difference?
Not sure what’s going wrong there.

Like, you report your gains, not the full sale price.

Yeah

Yeah I have no idea how that’s possible even if the stocks they liquidated to give me the requested amount were all the ones with outrageous profit margins.

Are you using, like, TurboTax or something?
Your stock broker should give you a statement that you draw from.

Like, when I filed, Schwab gave me a form that I just gave to TurboTax, and that handled it for me.

I’m realizing that I have a horrifically predictable way of composing follow-up messages.
Devastating.

I did not enter it manually, and came from forms submitted automatically from or by integrating the tax software with Betterment (what I used to invest).

Then I guess you just made bank of your investments.
Either that, or they got classified as regular income because you sold them after less than a year, but I don’t think that matches your problem.
