To observe is to interact with movement. To inspect, one must also move.
Information overload. Rather than just focusing on one aspect of the two investigation types, I ought to focus on all forms of information.
I will keep saying it again and again, but Protection is just a Kill-Only Block. Doctor is just a Rolestopper that only prevents Kills. Passive Block vs Active Block. I once played in a community (forgot which) that chose for Town to gain Roleblocker rather than Doctor.
Rather than preventing a Kill by guessing who the Mafia will attack, that community’s Town wanted to ‘attack’ the Mafia directly by blocking their “attempted kill”. If a Doctor healed correctly, then it soft-greenchecks the target. However, if a Roleblocker blocks correctly, then it soft-redchecks the target. And generally, redchecks > greenchecks.
However, I was new to that community, and I didn’t know everyone else’s skill level. I was -and still am- inexperienced, so I prefer the safer option of Doctor over Roleblocker. However… from a designer’s POV, I guess I do finally understand what that community was saying.
“Negation of [Power Type] of all other players who visits [Target]” vs. “Negation of [Power Type] on [Target]”. The former gives less information on the visitors’ identities, whereas the latter is (usually) limited to the number of their targets.
What is social deduction and deception? A game where players deduce and deceive each other. Power Roles are either a handicap or simply an add-on to relieve oneself the monotonous spiel in each game. Over time, these roles’ types have become generalized into categories. (Y’all already know whaet they be; I ain’t goin’ ta bother naming 'em agin.)
The Block category... is quite versatile. Whether it be an investigation, an attack, or even a simple visit, it negates all those actions, and renders them moot. They are -in my opinion- rivaled only by their sibling categories Redirection and Diversion. Personally, I only see them as one category of Redirection... but that is a can of worms for another day.
Now, I’ve been thinking: Why has no-one messed around this OP-ahh category? Sure, we sometimes nerf Rolestoppers by letting Kill-type attacks through, but how come no-one has ever made some sorta uh… “investigation-only block”? I feel like… most designers just use Immunity- or Misleading-type abilities, like Passive Ascetic or (Passive) Godfather. Why is that?
Have we -as a collective- become used to the concept? Is it a convenience? Is it a trend? ...but of course it is, and that's why I got bored of it.
I have been a setup designer for less than a decade, and even then I keep hearing about player fun and player agency. Now, that's fine and all, but... I don't want to make games with roles I have already seen before. When I host a game, I want people to remember me as "the crazy guy who gives his players unusual roles" and not "some random host who gives the same vanilla slop for the twentieth time".
Naturally, originality is less and less unattainable as time progresses. There is no such thing as "a never-ending stream of ideas", especially when player fun and agency are taken to consideration. I will meet my end as a setup designer somewhen in the future ...but it most certainly won't be in the next decade.
...to people like ■■■■■, who ask me if I should fear for when that moment happens, I say: "Why would I ever worry about a future that is so far ahead? You ought to focus on the present first before you get there."
It’s… funny, actually. I have thanatophobia, yet my parents also used that very same answer.
The fear didn’t really ever go away, but I… have tons of distractions to delay the inevitable panic attacks. As long as I eat new information and forget the old ones, eventually…
I will eventually forget it all.
(And thus, athazagoraphobia.)
I am of the opinion that more setup designers should use uncommon roles! It gives them less of this “host meta” that ‘everyone’ seems to be talking about. I know I like to be “the odd one out”, and I know that many setup designers are doing great at presenting their own gimmicks to the queue, but…
Surely… Surely, I am not the only one who can come up with these gimmicks?
TL;DR: Where are the other setup eccentrics? I want to experience crazy things as a player too!
