Okay sure. Maybe i got tripped up. But the original topic, was assigning weapons STR or DEX in a hypothetical realistic video game. I argued that a full plate knight with a sword would be DEX based, an a lightly armored archer would be STR based. Then I argued a polearm wouldnt’ be STR based (so also DEX based), and I assigned one handed axes and maces STR. Partly because of the way you fight with them - hit hard, instead of light cut like with a sword. Partly because you can’t really parry with them, or at least, it would be scuffed

I don’t see polearms as DEX based weapons, the same way as sword can be DEX based. There isn’t that much flexibility you can do with a polearm as a sword. Spears, maybe.
(I would say it is as hard to parry/block with polearms as with one-handed axes/maces, if not harder.)

Ive never seen HEMA fighting of 1h axes/maces without shields. I dont know how youd parry. Maybe cant really parry with polearms but you can put your opponent in a bind and play around that. Most sword vs sword fighting is them just touching their tips, which is also what halberd vs halberd fight looks like. I assign binding as DEX-based and im not sure if 1h axes/maces can bind
I think your issue is trying to assign video game ass attributes to a “realistic” situation

Hence why guns quickly overtook bows in terms of popularity. Learning to use a bow requires a ton of training, while early guns, even if they couldn’t keep up w bows in terms of reloading speed or accuracy, required very little specialized training.
