to make a long story short, i would argue the main reason that persists to this day is that everyone can use USD in a meaningful fashion

like saudi aramco doesn’t really want a new zealand dollar because the only place that really uses those for anything is new zealand

but the us dollar has enough international importance (and because we import so much stuff, there’s always a ton of them being sent elsewhere) that having USD on hand is never going to result in you having a currency that other countries don’t want when it comes time to make the next trade

iirc the gulf states in exchange for us protection basically agreed to only sell oil for USD

ergo EVERYBODY needs USD so a lot of international biz is conducted in USD, it’s why China has so much US Treasury debt because they need USD for the oil they shit

it’s also why our debt is do cheap and why if we ever lose global reserve currency status we are massively fucked
