Authentik also doesn’t use php AND cloudflare deployed protections anyway even if you are (and on cloudflare, which like, A LOT of the internet is)

Atlas clearly notified me my website wasn’t working so I would point it to a static page, foretelling the php vulnerability in order to save my precious site from government actors who wish to harm daeyron.com

So when I was talking to my psychiatrist they were speaking about side effects of medication and a few were like, “delusions of grandeur” or “feeling like there’s conspiracies plotting against you”
I truly am the embodiment of these side effects

Summary

tbf i get this too in the sense that if i want to quickly solve a bunch of people it’s easie to do that in mashes, but like individual actions feel way less consequential, like having a strong wolfread and pushing it over in a normal is going to have much more of an impact. i feel like it’s easier for the average player to be relevant in a normal game than a mash unless your ITA ends up hitting. because yes while your chances of being relevant on an absolute scale are probably greater in a mash than in a normal game, relative to what everyone else is also doing in a mash the average player will probably still be irrelevant

and tbh part of my view is colored from getting killed on the first night in every mash i play but even if i try to remove that bias, the gameplay still feels too formulaic to be super compelling to me, with the most basic example being the same people dying at the start of every game and getting listened to every game - because individual roles are less consequential and wolves won’t really kill them over loud voices especially early on unless they have peeks/hardclaims. a different example being everyone saying alexa should get the vote n1 protection in anni because “it’s alexa and she always dies”. like i’m pretty sure if people made that decision based on who was the most townread player then it would have been different. things like that are kinda just boring but at the same it’s usually optimal for town to play like that so it’s a problem

in other words there’s less variance in mashes which i didn’t expect to be saying given well ITAs and everything, but with the higher playercount and more roles that’s how it is. normals have the potential to be more interesting because of the variance caused by things like that one LHF who gets killed every game randing a strong role. it does mean you get more problems where a team wins at rand but like, but like idk it feels like a worthy trade off for mashes which tend to settle into the same sort of blob each game. this is purely a preference thing though, so i can see why people might prefer that, especially if they are in the sweet spot of high efforting to have an impact but not enough / not enough of a reputation for wolves to instakill them

the really rigid mash meta ties into what daeron said about how mashes have balance problems inherent to their design which i’ve touched on before, that is how in a mash the proportion of “threatening players that wolves would need to kill” is far less than in a normal game on average, especially when you factor in the multiple kills they get. this often results in most threats to wolves being wiped out after the second phase, which means they had 1 phase with ITAs to have an impact. not to mention the impact they can have is limited - it’s much harder for these players to get solid reads on everyone that should be sheeped later into the game. in a normal game wolves usually can’t eliminate all the problematic players this fast - like if there even just 3, that’s already going to take 3 nights and that doesn’t even factor in PRs which have more of an impact on average (on average doing heavy lifting here), plus someone who dies on night 1 would still probably have given a read on every player which could still be relevant later in the game. there are way more tools for the lategame villagers to use in a normal game. i would guess what i have described here to be the main reason towns consistently lose mashes, and it’s one of my main issues with actually playing them - the eepy endgame villager problem. i haven’t put much thought into how to tackle this issue and i don’t know of any town catchup mechanics that have both worked and felt fair.

note: i define a threatening player here as not someone who is just a strong player, but someone who has the activity required to be a threat to wolves - there are way more people in normals who can be a threat that are mostly harmless in mashes because they simply do not have the time to play enough in 12 hours, which is why the proportion generally ends up being way less. this is also kind of an issue with the culture of mashes in general, both alignments generally need to have players to threadcamp the whole day to have the best chance of winning (but it’s pretty much a requirement for town to do so). wolves can already coordinate everything together, including night actions, whereas villagers don’t know their teammates and often have missed half of the thread so there has to be villagers who are keeping track and can provide reliable information so the less informed villagers have any idea of what to do. my understanding is wasted/bad town PR actions is the other main reason they lose

if someone makes a mash where wolves can’t just instantly kill all of the players that are a threat to them and village has a chance without having several people threadcamping all day then i’d be more interested but this isn’t usually how it goes

i know a lot about privilege escalation that’s just your life when you’re fucking white

like the town mash formula is just

vote out the polarized wolf on day 1 of which there is always one
protect alexa* night 1 and hope she isn’t a wolf
kill all the lowposters in ITAs on day 2
kill that random guy who heroshoots a villager
proceed to steadily lose after wolves have eliminated the majority of threats to themselves by day 3

or if it’s a shots mash:

only villagers post for the first 12 hours
villagers kill each other for the most part because they make up the vast majority of posters during the early part of day 1 (in which ITAs are enabled the whole time)
wolves show up late (because who would shoot a 0 poster) and town is too far behind to come back

it feels like because of this the intrigue pretty much has to come from the roles and creativity of the designers rather than being able to join a mash and expecting the social dynamics to be any different than normal

*in this post alexa is given as an example of any strong player who usually dies on night 1 if town with the distinction that they are not actually super townread but protected because they usually die on night 1 as town, which is the part i take issue with, in my other post i did actually mean the user alexa)

i think the best part of mashes is posting nonsense because there’s no postcap and seeing ridiculous roles and playing the minigames. and scheming if you’re a wolf. nothing is fun if you’re town and have responsibility. this is why getting the Die And Freely Post Nothing But Nonsense And Play Minigames And Scheme Forever wolf role was the highlight of my mash career and getting the Commute And Commute Someone Else Nightly And Also Five Dayvigs On Day Four town role was the lowlight. and also why i host now

i think the structure of mashes is more like “wolves kill the previous day’s leaders, today’s leaders are slightly but not overwhelmingly worse, repeat until a wolf has infiltrated leadership at which point town loses.”

like good players will always step up to replace the previous nightkills but they won’t be as good as those who came before. like someone reviving but coming back wrong. and eventually they come back completely rotting

yeah the problem is if everyone played like this then the people who actually care would have a miserable time, and if you get an important role and do this too then your team won’t be very happy with you
