I think the cutoff point for me is the same as Kyubey’s, where it becomes parasitic when caring about them becomes a net negative to your life.

Find where the marginal utility becomes 0 and all that jazz.

That asks broader questions about how much control you have over your child, but that’s probably already reflected in how you’d approach this.
So assume “a normal amount of control”: you can tell them not to do specific things, but they will encounter people with parents that’re far more lax and far less lax.
