Theres a paid subscription version and irs also just nor very expensive to run I assume. Its open source so you can also self host it

it comes from enterprise clients (my company pays for it). the free version is open source and can be self-hosted if you really want to. it’s not a bad instinct to be suspicious of something that’s free, but there hasn’t been any red flags from their team that I’m aware of.

if you want an example of free software that doesn’t suck, cURL is a free library that is like critical internet infrastructure. the creator and lead dev (Daniel Stenberg) writes a blog that’s pretty interesting to read. he had his phone number in the license, and had to remove it because he was getting calls from people with infotainment system issues and it was the only phone number they could find to call in the car’s menu. there’s also all the stuff made by GNU which is free, has been free for decades, and is also extremely important software since Linux relies on it and a fuck ton of infrastructure uses Linux. there’s also Docker which has a similar freemium model where they get money from enterprise clients, but can be used entirely for free and with limits that someone just working personal projects should never run into. Bitwarden is similar culturally from what I can tell
