Culinarily, fruits are stuff you put in pies, fruit salad, etc. Botanically, fruit’s the part with the seeds in it (oversimplified).
Culinarily, a vegetable is a savory part of a plant used in cooking. There is no botanical definition of a vegetable.
Tomatoes ARE:
- A fruit (botanically)
- Not a fruit (culinarily)
- A vegetable (culinarily)
But you cannot say they are “not a vegetable”. They are definitely a vegetable. They fit the culinary definition, and there does not exist a botanical definition of “vegetable” for tomatoes to contradict.

from the culinary class i took in HS fruits are a type of vegetable culinarily, like a subcategory of vegetable, meaning tomatoes are still a fruit and I think they should fit under that category!

Tomatoes are supposed to be sweet! Unfortunately most of the ones you get at the supermarket are unripe ones that contain very little sugar that have been exposed to ethylene, a natural plant hormone, that makes them turn red
