when you’re talking to the most milquetoast moderate dem college student from the suburbs and you make the critical mistake of calling a homeless person human
Turning Point USA is a conservative activist organization in the US that was founded by the recently deceased Charlie Kirk. Charlie Kirk (and consequently his organization) espoused a return to an American culture more similar to early 20th century America than to late 20th and 21st century America, and, relevant to this conversation, that includes the roles of women. The shorthand here would be that TPUSA would like to see the return of the subservient housewife as the dominant role for women.
The girl Marissa described is nominally incompatible with these views, and, if TPUSA had its way, the life she enjoys now would be radically different in ways one would expect to be negative (you can already willingly enter into an arrangement similar to those of the domestic housewife of first half 20th century America if you choose to, and she chose otherwise).
When I said “they would keep you so busy with undervalued and underappreciated with household and hermeneutic labor,” I was effectively saying the same thing as the previous statement, but baking in criticism of the ways women used to be (and far too frequently still are) treated as housewives. Household labor is labor, but has historically been seen as less valuable, important, and difficult as what someone would typically do for work outside of the home. Hermeneutic labor is a bit more complicated, but a definition is:
Hermeneutic labor is the burdensome activity of: understanding and coherently expressing one’s own feelings, desires, intentions, and motivations; discerning those of others; and inventing solutions for relational issues arising from interpersonal tensions.
This was (broadly still is) primarily performed by women in America in their close personal relationships with men. Doing all of the heavy emotional lifting in a relationship like marriage can be emotionally exhausting, and may in fact be more difficult with an autistic person.
“you can’t even go to downtown [city] anymore its a total homeless hellscape theyll stab you with needles” NOPE youre done. there is hope for turning point girl but in 40 years YOU will be sending death threats to city council members because they voted to allow a food bank 4 miles from your house
“Homelessness makes me uncomfortable because I’m forced to witness and potentially interact with people actively suffering and left behind by society” vs “Homelessness makes me uncomfortable because there are people suffering on the street in desperate need of shelter and likely food, medical care, and fulfilling social interactions”
i dont even know if its that. a lot of how I hear people talk about homeless people gives “I haven’t gotten over the human urge to have a permanent subclass of the most vulnerable people to scapegoat for all of my problems but know its wrong (or looks wrong) to choose lgbt or people of color as this scapegoat subclass” vibes
(not to mention that homeless people are more often lgbt or poc because surprise the people who have been historically structurally discriminated against end up in the worst scenarios more often)
people need to take woke 101. seriously. beam just an hour of nbowie wallposts into their brains.
