I believe it gets into it at some point, but it’s not that everyone who identified with one of those ideologies explicitly supports those things, but that those ideologies are being used to launder them. Like if you were comparing two charities, an effective altruist would say to choose the one that would result in the greatest amount of change. If one charity can save like X lives from tuberculosis for every $1000 donated but another can save X + Y lives from malaria for that same amount, effective altruism would say to donate to the latter. However, you can make a similar sort of argument under the same logic that is more ethically dubious i.e. moving money that would go to mosquito nets for malaria to OpenAI because of the nebulous good the technology could do down the line or this one entrepreneur’s startup that makes these high-minded claims and oh oops that founder has donated to the latest iteration of the Pioneer Fund. There’s a pretty clear intersection with longtermism here where you can take ideas that seem like there are a sound moral calculus, but shift them into ones that seem like they operate on the same logic while being a lot more dubious upon further scrutiny. It’s pretty easy to imagine that it’s both true that these movements are tangled in other movements that are not Good and that not all people involved in them are fully aware of it or support the Not Good stuff.

i think the 7/11 is my favorite 24h open establishment of texas looking back but whataburger is up there. my top non-24h establishment def the cvs if that was open all the time i would have stayed in texas just for that cvs
