And i like my dorm this year. I mean nothing can beat my first year because nothing beats the vibes of “my boyfriend and my best friend both live on the same floor as me” but this one has a little space that I’ve made into a garden (that doesn’t get any light so its fake flowers)

This is almost certainly true. The real benefit of a dishwasher is its convenience and that it uses way, way less water. Also my dishes came out cleaner after I watched a Technology Connections video and found out my father had no idea how to use a dishwasher effectively and so I had also been doing it wrong.
This can vary on your model, but the water should be hot on the first cycle and a lot of models don’t check, so it can be good to run the sink on the same pipe until it’s hot for example. Powder detergents are marginally less convenient, but is more economical and can yield better results depending on how you wash dishes. Detergent packets are formulated for a full load, so if you run less than that, you’re wasting detergent and may leave dishes feel greasy because there was way too much detergent in the water for the dish load.
Also there are two cycles — a pre-wash and main wash — and both want some detergent which just isn’t possible with packets. The pre-wash will be pretty ineffective so the main wash needs to do everything which can also be less effective depending on what you’re washing etc. With powder, you can load the main detergent thing, close it, and then sprinkle some on top for the pre-wash. And you can properly dose the detergent for the load size with powder so it can avoid other issues. Doing some of these has lead me to minimal issues with the dishwasher when I had a lot more previously.
