Its not pompous in the uk its the proper word to use. Young gen z probably use movie more now due to more americanization . In bulgarian the word is also film (филм)

could be the gasket around the truck hatch is damaged, and it mixed with dirt trapped around the edge. i’m not sure. you could also try googling the make/model of your car and seeing if any else has reported the same issue on a forum or something. like oil, radiator fluid, washer fluid, freon, etc. is all stored near the engine generally. most of those likely have some kind of smell. brake fluid (which is a form of hydraulic fluid iirc) should have a smell and/or feel oily, but if it’s not that, I’m not sure what it could be besides water.
