To be completely fair to me… my blackbox stats aren’t bad.

How does this even work

Acceleration is only poor because 1. the power of my car is a statistical outlier for people getting their typical first car and 2. people are so slow??

My black box policy is actually quite generous.

They have you stick a black box (it’s just a small device) on your car that reads all of the road data. It then sends it encrypted to your phone via bluetooth (you need their app installed) which then gets sent to their servers.
The app also monitors your phone activity by staying on top all the time but it’s generally terrible at doing it. They give you the option to mark yourself as a passenger instead of a driver when using the app but it literally voids all of the data for your drive on your policy so I have no doubts people are using it to void a bad break etc., lol

I’ve used my phone in my car while my mum has driven it and it caused my score to plummet. I marked myself as a passenger retroactively and it just voided the entire reduction.

Yes, dear instructor, you can’t reprimand me now as I was a passager behind the steering wheel

It’s hilariously bad at detecting fast acceleration and speeding beyond take-off, though. Either that or they just don’t care. You must have to be egregiously speeding to get scored on it (like, beyond 70mph+)

Dear insurance you mean?

Black box policy sounds like a college student work. A presented theory with horrible practicalities

The brake detection is actually quite good. I’ve hard braked about twice and it correctly deducted my score. The first one was absolutely my fault (I was zoned out and some guy took a turn where nobody ever takes a turn) and the second one was not
That being said whether or not punishing drivers financially for braking badly is a good idea (i.e this may cause them to be hesistant to brake at all and would rather chance it) is another discussion

Oh also I can’t test emergency braking with my vehicle because it would penalise me. That’s also an issue with the brake detection. My car’s brakes have not been stress tested due to this.

I suppose there might not be a certain way to tell if braking like that is valid

There isn’t so they just penalise you regardless.
