In the boys specifically its like that because the original comic is extremely edgy, there is little substance to it other than just edgyness, so the authors of the show were split between trying to keep it accurate, and trying to inject more substance like story or character development

I think gore is fine in context

Like it elevates the seriousness of scenes

But if you have too much of it then it loses that effect

gore either has to be ever-present so you get used to it to convey tone or so sparsely used to convey tone when it occurs

The boys season 4 is ironically probaby the most accurate to the source material bwahahah

i think gore was prob at his peak in 2000, shame what happened in florida.
