First Youtube recommendation is one on fraud in a Minecraft hedge fund.
I have a number of questions.
I feel like this video is brushing over âwhat funds does a Minecraft hedge fund manageâ a bit too easily.
Ok, so my understanding is that they have a virtual currency within the server that people could exchange for real USD, either in or out.
This sounds like a recipe for deflation.
yeah
I should elaborate on this a bit more (read: Ash has gotten distracted and decided to do a bunch of Googling).
Was specifically thinking about Axie Infinity and the idea of âpeople view the game as an investment and thus will pull out once theyâve recouped that investment rather than putting it back into the economyâ (see the Folding Ideas video on NFTs and the report on Axie Infinity he mentions in the video). In some sense, the deflation argument is best seen by the worst-case scenario of a positive feedback loop: an economy sinks, leading people pull out their investments, causing deflation that worsens the situation, leading more people to pull out their investments, on and on until it goes under.
I feel like something like this has room for central bank stabilization via the intermediate currency exchange rates? If the exchange rate is currently 100 Minecraft currency for $1, then high inflation means you can reduce it to 90 Minecraft currency for $1 to encourage people to pull their money out of the economy and high deflation means that you can increase it to 110 Minecraft currency for $1 to encourage people to put money into the economy (these changes are exaggerated for explanation purposes; in practice, you see movements in terms of basis points, 1/100th of 1%).
Note that these are the opposite of what the market would set themselves: if the market controlled the exchange rate (like it does in the Real World
, the reverse of above would happen.
I think an interesting counterexample is EVE Online, which suffered from inflation in late 2016/early 2017 when the devs added rorqual mining, which was significantly more efficient than all other existing forms of mining and thus led to an influx of revenue into the economy:
Le source.
Note the jump in Mining when rorqual mining was introduced in November 2016, especially relative to the Destruction of resources.
My understanding is that the developers attempted to counteract this by increasing the brokerâs fee, but if the forums are to be believed, persistent hyperinflation continues to this day.
The argument for deflation is that once people reach a return threshold for their investment, they will pull out of the game economy; the argument for inflation is that developers have the ability to add faucets to their games that the market cannot price in. And with a game like Minecraft, especially given that Mojangâs design philosophy has been to not override the niches of existing elements (I remember watching an interview about this but canât find it), I believe the former is more likely to be the case.
i got an advertisement from âglitch_productionsâ saying ânow greenlitâ
I should actually watch the video now.
