I definetly think Light is smarter, since he outplayed L in the end. (With external help, yes, but I think it was implied, that he anticipated that reaction as well.) How smart you need to be to anticipate literal god’s reactions in your equations…

he saw a shinigami be protective over a human and said “yeah i can manipulate this”. meanwhile L had absolutely no fucking clue as to the shinigami and still repeatedly outsmarted light and misa. bro saw people having heart attacks and in like a couple weeks said “yeah it’s this one kid”
