box fans

I learned this in college: men are always having those box-shaped fans you put by your window, and if you’re a women you cannot be having those, and if you question this you probably have a box fan

did we already have the conversation about how undertale yellow’s characters are much more conventionally appealing and therefore much less monsterlike as a result. i think we did

i have many thoughts on undertale yellow’s writing

one of base undertale’s weak points is the gray area between routes, but at least in undertale it makes some level of sense. the crux of the pacifist route is that every enemy is coming to support you, so you do need to give them reason to like you (or at least be alive/not actively hate you). it makes some amount of sense that killing one ruins enemy would lock you out of pacifist, even if it doesn’t entirely make sense that it locks you out of the leadup to pacifist. but flowey is pulling the strings of that leadup, so you can chalk it up to him knowing it just won’t work.

undertale yellow sucks at this gray area. martlet always seems to know exactly how much of a killer you are when you talk to her on that rooftop, with the only explanation being that she senses an “alarming aura.” ceroba always seems to know whether you’ve killed before (and as such whether her plan is a viable option), and she doesn’t even bother to explain that one. these both apply even if your only kill was in dark ruins, where neither of these characters would’ve had any reason to at least hear about it

the may neutral route is especially egregious, because she doesn’t even know starlo’s dead. he’s considered missing, and she should know you haven’t killed before through her general omniscience, apparently. you can even try to confess to killing starlo but she always misinterprets it, she’s clearly in denial. but ceroba, who in the pacifist route is willing to go through great lengths and directly hurt starlo to see her plan through to the end, drops everything to search for starlo and just lets you walk.

in general uty suffers from not having a sans like character who’s aware of the general game mechanics but unable to do anything about it. having him know about the resets, know your exact LV, and make educated guesses about you accordingly really makes for a more narratively cohesive experience. every character in uty just operates on vibes with you (with the obvious exception of flowey, who is directly in control of the timeline and clearly plays a different kind of role).

Yeah there’s a lot of little spots where they ape Undertale but don’t get, like… the underlying mechanism

Like the fact that all the changes in routes are to some degree direct consequences of your actions (rather than arbitrary changes based on your Soul Nature) is good and important! The game isn’t supposed to be some metaphysical punishment it’s supposed to be how the world works. “What if an RPG worked how the world works”

i intentionally didn’t mention the gray area between geno and neutral to avoid spoilers. undertale kinda sucks at this in general, with one failed kill quota or one spared boss making the underground act like nothing ever happened. uty is arguably worse

Like one of the weaker parts of Undertale IMO is the super sharp line between geno and not-geno where people don’t react to you nearly as badly if you miss one monster

Jinx!!

Maycat go get out of bed and go to 12 o cloc meeting pls @May do this

tbf the only fangame i’ve seen hit this line somewhat well is TS!Underswap, where if you abort a geno route you’re put on a similar evacuation route where it’s clear the underground isn’t just going to forgive and forget. but that still doesn’t cover the case where you miss one monster in the first area

PS!Outertale just doesn’t let you abort geno, period. but you have to wipe out the first area to get there in the first place! many such flaws

PS!Outertale is at least willing to build a route around the funny fact that you can technically get true pacifist while beating every enemy you encounter nearly to death. and makes you actually face consequences for that

In general I think they already made Undertale and if you want to make a game that is comeplling in the same way as Undertale you have to make something that isn’t Undertale. That’s not what these fangames want to be and that’s fine but I’m not especially passionate about Undertale I just like good games
