I’ve got three separate theories regarding Deltarune’s ending. They all kinda go together.

Spoilers for Chapters 3 and 4

#1 - Weird Route Theory: Noelle dies in the normal route, killed when she isn’t strong enough to defeat an enemy (a scripted loss during Chapter 5 or 6). This becomes the reason for the Weird Route: the player wants to make Noelle strong enough to defeat that entity at any cost. This leads to them spiraling down a consequence hole that ends with them fighting Susie and reaching an early end in a different way.

#2 - The Shelter Incident: Dess’ disappearance was caused when she and Kris went into the bunker, and while trying to get out, Kris accidentally killed Dess. Through a deal with [unknown evil entity], Kris took on the soul in exchange for Dess being ‘revived’ under that entity’s control. Carol learns of this at some point, and her desire to keep her daughter alive - even in that broken state - is why she puts up with Kris.

#3 - Only One Ending(?): I think that Deltarune has to have three endings, if only because Weird Route Theory would suck to exist as being the only way to break fate. My guess is that the Pure Crystal can be combined with the Shadow Mantle to enable you to beat the aforementioned scriptable loss, enabling you to access a True Ending that breaks out of the prophecy and enables everyone to survive.

I’ve heard the theory that in certain routes the game “won’t end” – you’ll get softlocked, and that’s The Ending Of The Game. Which would be a fun way for “only one ending” to go
