The most important thing is avoiding fourth, as you move up the ranks the fourth place penalty becomes steeper and steeper while third doesnāt. If you never come fourth, you will essentially always move up in the ranks

The tile flipped up in the top left corner is the dora indicator: the tile after that one is worth 1 extra han each and will be visibly shiny in your hand. One of each 5 is marked with a red dot and will also be hsiny + 1 extra han.
If you call riichi, then upon a win, you get to flip over an additional, hidden dora indicator, and whatever tile it indicates will be dora for your hand, too. Thatās āura doraā.
If you call kan (4 of a tile), then you get to flip over an additional dora indicator immediately for the entire table, and thatāll be dora for the rest of the game for everybody.

For example this is my sick ura dora moment. Pure gambling whether youāll get it, but the ura indicator ended up being a 5 of circles, so my 6 of circles became dora
