My flight leaves in, like, ten minutes, so I’m on a timer.

I guess some miscellaneous thoughts surrounding FoLermon, then.
I kinda want to have the new version fit a normal curve with a standard deviation of 3% in win rate.

the fucking QTE cookie

In practice, this means the max win rate I want to allow is a 58%, and the minimum is a 42%.

The Mod Traits have been written up. Only stretch is that Nbowie becomes a Mod type, but I don’t imagine that calls too much to the imagination.

The hard part is when I want to balance non-quantitative info.

Arete, for example, gets the Trait Historian. If they’re in your party, your opponent’s bench is revealed at the start of battle.

On one hand, this cuts the element of surprise and limits the options you need to consider when planning your actions.

On the other hand, how do you value it? How do you crate a mechanism by which you can evaluate how good a given Trait is if it’s so situation-dependent?

This is a bit of an extreme example - few of the other Traits are like this - but the answer simply comes down to, ā€œCode smarter agents,ā€ which is hard.

There’s also the problem of making sure that characters aren’t boring without inciting powercreep.
You can definitely make characters balanced but boring; and you can absolutely make characters exciting but broken.

Additionally, it’s dangerous to give characters a STAB attack that deals more than 33 damage because it means you’re able to 2HKO neutral opponents, which kinda nukes the system.

These all came together when trying to create the May Trait: you can choose to use an attack as a Spread attack, dealing 70% of the damage to both opponents.

As is, the code will maximize damage if no kills are on the board, so it always uses the Spread attack, but this results in the game’s handling of Speed coming back to bite them.

The way I’m now handling it is that May will only use the attack if they can guarantee that both enemies will go off the field, but even that feels wrong.

Alright, I’m wiped out, and plane’s taking off now.
@mollylikesorigami, back to you.
