I’ve hosted many a roleplay over the years across many scenarios, but this one is probably my most ambitious task at fictional worldbuilding yet: What if the Mariners made the World Series?

The Mariners are playing the Dodgers in the 2026 World Series. If the Mariners win, there might be baseball yet in 2027. If the Dodgers win, no chance. With players trying to appeal to fans more than ever and gambling on the rise, your influence on the outcome is greater than you might think.

Most players are Mariners fans or Dodgers haters who want the Mariners to win at all costs. Some players are Dodgers fans, who will of course be pulling for their team. Other players may have their own separate goals, such as getting the World Series cancelled entirely.

You enter the Navyshell Castle. Despite your loud entrance, nobody inside seems to react with even the base level of interest. A short young man with bags around his eyes, clad in bejeweled blue robes probably worth 10 times more than the flask Sandra died to get, glances over briefly before returning his focus towards fiddling with a bracelet. Two women, in simpler but still high-quality clothes, sit cross-legged across from each other about 10 feet in front of the man in blue. There’s no doubt in your mind that standing before you is King Harksley and the Cordial Twins. The three people you came all this way to kill. To your left is a golden bowl, roughly waist height, filled with oranges.

You grab an orange, but before you throw it, you get a strong sinking feeling. You find it too suspicious that none of them seem that worried about a group full of strangers carrying weapons, and you hesitate

Since he already saw me reach for it, I can’t show weakness. I ignore my gut and show some follow-through.

Four years ago…

The day of Melvin Hawthorne’s murder was a rather beautiful one. Songbirds fluttered through the crisp autumn air, a faint hint of woodsmoke wafting with them through an open window of a penthouse suite in downtown Arrington.

You can see the whole city from here, Melvin thought on his last day alive. It was quite moving, seeing the golds and oranges of the fall leaves blend perfectly with the reds and yellows of the flames engulfing the nearby orphanage.

Behind him, Harbin Li, investigative reporter for the Arrington Tribune, sobbed on the ground.

“Please don’t stain my floor,” Melvin said. “That’s vintage pre-war wood you’re so thoughtlessly weeping on.”

“They did nothing wrong,” the man wailed. “You didn’t have to bring them into this.”

“ You brought them into this,” Melvin corrected the ignorant man. He was quite imprecise with his words. Melvin felt vaguely disappointed - he’d expected more from a reporter. “If you hadn’t spent so much time there, I would’ve hardly considered it a target for retribution.”

“They’re just kids!” the man cried, tugging at his bonds. “They are innocent!”

“ Were. And perhaps you should’ve considered that when you wrote that news article,” Melvin smiled pleasantly. "Mr. Li, I am a fair man. Small offenses have small consequences. But trying to smear my name only a month before the election? That is a very large offense. "

“You won’t get away with this,” he hissed, having regained some of his spirit. “Some of them must’ve escaped. And they’ll expose you for the murderer you really are, you’ll see-”

The intercom buzzed. “Boss, we got a survivor here asking for help. Says her name’s Addie. What do you want us to do?”

The reporter stiffened.

“Treat her injuries, then send her to my office,” Melvin said lightly. He smiled at the reporter, who began to cry again.

He returned to looking outside at the fire. Soon, all the loose ends would be here in his office, and he would trim them in one clean stroke.

Melvin Hawthorne, ruler of the criminal underworld and soon-to-be-mayor continued scheming until the door opened behind him.

It really is a nice day, he thought.

Melvin does in fact get killed by Addie (he totally deserved it - I was going to write a scene with him being all smug and everything but it was already way too long) and then she goes on the run with Harbin and the few other survivors from the fire

atlas I don’t think killing someone is the only solution

you also need to destroy the body

I would probably say ‘hide’ or ‘bury’ or ‘get rid of’ instead of ‘destroy,’ but this captures my style of typing exceptionally well
