forgot to post my extended write up for that Xiu Xiu song i subbed last category
So for me, this falls under the second thing. For context, growing up a long time ago, I had a cat named Xiu Xiu that my family adopted when i was like 5 or 6 or something. For a long time, that’s all the name Xiu Xiu meant to me, didn’t know about the band lol, I know now that Xiu Xiu has been a well-known band in the rymcore underground or like whatever you call it lol. A year prior to Xiu Xiu’s FORGET releasing, my cat Xiu Xiu passed away due to old age. Some months later, there I am on YouTube just curious what the heck Xiu Xiu meant, so i typed it into the search bar just curious to see what results it would show me.
This just so happened to be around the time when Xiu Xiu’s 2017 album FORGET came out. So I listened to some songs from the project and got hooked as it wasn’t really like anything else I had really heard prior and it intrigued me. I would spin many songs off the record over and over on YouTube enjoying songs off the project. Now I was definitely not an album person back when this released, I knew what albums were and stuff, but I wasn’t that serious about music, not really going outside of modern mainstream pop and mainstream alternative rock that you would hear on the radio (with exceptions such as listening to what my parents listened to as a child like The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Simon and Garfunkel, Disney songs, etc). None of the exceptions were outside of the mainstream much though.
So anyways, one day I noticed that just some dude had apparently put out a review for Xiu Xiu’s FORGET and I decided I should check it out as I was enjoying what I was hearing from the band on the album. As you probably begrudingly guessed, this “some dude” was Anthony Fantano of the YouTube channel, theneedledrop. I didn’t even know before this that album reviews even existed on YouTube. Fantano gave the album a positive review, and I felt reassured that I wasn’t just liking total trash or something lol. But after this I decided that I wanted to pursue looking into more albums. And I have never looked back since then.
I do not think I would have been the same passionate music listener that I am today without jumping into that rabbit hole 7 years ago (holy goodness gracious it does NOT feel that long). For that, FORGET holds a special place in my heart despite maybe being a very random album to kickstart my obsession with music all things considered. I could have literally chose any song from FORGET to put as my entry to be completely honest, because all it it fits within the confines of quote “a song that you listened to alot in a particular big transition part of your life”.
