Occasionally I swapped one out for another if they were noticeably slow at leveling though

I think the issue I’m running into is largely that the purely circular type chart breaks down when numbers are so even

like in FoLermon 1 there were clearly better defensive and offensive types, and even if that wasn’t balanced well (Homophobic was not only arguably the best defensive type but also inarguably the strongest offensive type) that still meant that, when drafting, you were making decisions about whether to take a more defensive or offensive mon (once all the broken/OP ones were gone, at least) that kept things interesting throughout the draft

here any type being more “defensive” or “offensive” is pretty fake tbh - the type chart is a perfect circle and there’s about the same number of mons of each type, so no type really feels like it specializes in one area or another by enough to really stand out for it

like sure Homophobic is probably the strongest defensive type in the game, but the difference between it and the worst defensive typing (Smug) is not all that large and in any given battle it may not end up mattering much at all

imo it kinda takes the interest out of teambuilding since the gameplan is basically just to grab whatever of the few remaining probably-OP mons there are, and then to simply pick whatever coverage you don’t already have while avoiding stacking up on the same weakness too much and netting things that resist the weaknesses of your other mons where you can

planning for any sort of true defense beyond that is pretty useless when the odds an opposing mon will be able to hit you for supereffective are pretty much equal no matter what type you are

and planning for offense is in pretty much the same boat

but yeah tl;dr is that teambuilding is mostly fake this time since every type is equally good and it pmuch just comes down to who brings what to battle and what they do there way more than it comes down to who has what on their team
