does anyone else have a mental block when it comes to committing to watching a tv show which is still airing in the event that it randomly gets canceled causing the narrative to either be blatantly unfinished or with a Reasonably Passable ending but with stuff that’s unresolved because the showrunners were clearly planning for another season

i guess the latter isn’t too bad it’s mainly the former which is annoying but neither are great

most of the time i end up watching only old tv shows because of this

oh there’s also the game of thrones situation where the last third of the show just ends up being slop which for some people (me being one of them) kinda makes the whole rest of the show not worth watching? so yeah, feels like i’m cursed to only be able to commit to tv shows that have already ended (that also don’t have a slop ending)

currently i’m having this problem with frieren

i tend to be less anal about this habit with anime because my logic is that if i really like the show and it doesn’t finish/is adapted terribly then i can at least read the manga

but shortly after starting it i found out the manga has been on an indefinite hiatus for a year

so. that’s rather unfortunate

This might be my fault (I started TBHK and then it went on hiatus, and then I started Frieren and then it went on hiatus, and after that one, I stopped starting ongoing manga).

i mean i could see how that could be an issue in some cases but like I don’t really think it needs to be?

like a lot of shit is totally fine in smaller, technically-incomplete chunks

kinda like star wars with the prequel films/disney films or the MCU, at a certain point you just have to accept that not every part of it is the exact same quality and maybe some of the individual stories are awesome even in the context of a greater work that, as a whole, doesn’t really have consistent quality (or in the MCU case even a defined end yet - but like you aint seeing me dismiss Iron Man just because the entire MCU is still running long past the point of me caring about it lol)

looking at anime I can think of numerous examples off the top of my head of shows that I absolutely love parts of that aren’t ā€œcompleteā€ yet and for all I know may never be

like Re:Zero was a good show before S2 was confirmed and in the years where it looked like that was all we were gonna get, and now that there’s more being adapted pretty consistently it’s like ā€œoh cool two cakesā€

Made in Abyss is also getting continuously adapted as the source material progresses, but like even if it stopped now before the upcoming third season and after the movie and s2 that were good-but-not-as-good as S1, I’d still think season 1 is one of the single greatest pieces of animated media ever created

I know Oshi no Ko’s ending had some sort of AoT-style drama that I don’t know the details of (and if you spoil me i will be extremely upset at you!) but again like with Made in Abyss I think the first episode on its own is so strong as to justify the existence of the work (and this isn’t even considering that there are more episodes across three seasons right now and there’s some really good stuff in there)

I could come up with a ton of examples of stuff still in sequel jail that’s still a good time for what does exist too

yes its really nice when a long story can maintain consistent quality from end to end, but sometimes its worth just taking what there is and appreciating the value in it even if it’s not technically complete :)

Walking outside

A little girl runs up to this guy walking his dog and starts asking about him

As I heae hiim going ā€œhes 9! We got him when-ā€ he gets cut off and the little girl goes ā€œOur dog lost a leg!ā€ And he just went ā€œOh!.. I’m sorry to hear that!ā€

our cat snapped her leg at one point, but luckily we found a surgeon who was able to bolt it back together

I get that, but I’ve been watching Avatar: Seven Havens with friends as it’s been airing, and it’s a lot of fun to be experiencing it contemporaneous to a bunch of other people. I see posts on social media about it and fan art, and hear discussions and theories and whatever. It can be hard to retroactively join in on a communal experience. Yeah, Frieren may not be finished for awhile, but it had or is probably still having a little cultural moment and you can be a participant now if you want.

plus some things are really only good as a cultural moment in this fashion

Higurashi Gou and Sotsu come to mind as insanely hype announcements that were absolutely incredible roller coasters to be on week to week, but watching it all at once after the fact feels like itd be a waste of time compared to watching something better lol
