the best method of getting pedestrians across the street safely is by having bricks they can carry across to the other side. drivers don’t fuck around with someone who has a brick in their hand (my understanding this is a real thing done that has reduced incidents)

my university has designated pedestrian crossings with lights and everything and we are conditioned to not actually turn the light red and jaywalk instead
