Recently in a game i said someone was failing their duty to town in how they were playing (purely a gameplay critique) and they came back and said it really hurt them.

I think i gave my best response to this in that i shouldnt matter enough to hurt you over in game critique. Im just a guy playing a game. Like if i genuinely make something less fun for you… let me know. very little about how i play a game is so in stone that it cant be altered to accomodate people.

I have like 300 different approaches as both alignments i can change stuff up to make it fun and still manage to die a horrible death before d2 as town it is fine.

Using pathos generally is normal and within the bounds of acceptable play in a game about convincing people. We as players generally understand that some level of emotional deception may be happening, because we feel things about the game.

However, there is also the social contract of sportsmanship at play that is difficult to legislate around. The median forum mafia player is neurodivergent and kind of bad at emotional regulation (hi!). How do you know whether you’re crossing a line in the moment?

I try to operate under a golden rule of “if I were playing IRL, with my friends, would I do this.” If I blew up at my homie because they fumbled the bag in Dungeon Duos during Beerio Party, people would eventually stop inviting me to Beerio Party. This is basically what May’s excerpt delineates, which is good.

That’s part of my general confusion about how many people play mafia while openly professing to hating mafia. Do not BE a joy thief, do not ENGAGE with joy thieves, life is too short.

Man our friend used to insist on having the auto-steering setting on in Beerio Kart and would brag about how good he was at Mario Kart and how he always won. And if 1. he lost 2. anybody suggested he won because he was the only one who literally couldn’t drive off the road, he’d get really upset and say it wasn’t fun for him if he couldn’t (win/have the auto-steering)
