The closer in baseball is a pitcher who comes in specifically in the last inning when their team is winning by a small margin and they need somebody to hold down the fort and ensure the other team doesn’t score the go-ahead run.
In MMOLB, the player who is your closer is randomly determined, and they are GUARANTEED to appear in a close game in the last inning, even if they suck. So if the other team is winning by 3 runs, you get a chance against the closer, who can always be shit.
The box score shows a team who is losing 3-0, but then in the last inning, they score 6 runs and win, because the other team’s closer was shit.
The image is constructed from screetshots of the baseball sim website ransom-letter style
Note: if you score the go-ahead run in the bottom of the ninth inning, there’s no way the other team can win, since there’s… not any more game left for them to score in, so the game ends instantly.
The only way to win a game 6-3 in the bottom of the ninth is to score all 3 go-ahead runs at once, meaning the screenshot displays a closer who let at least 2 runners on and then gave up a home run
i clutched out a 61-59 season because in game 120 the manager took the other team’s 2 run lead as carte blanche to send out their 12.5 ERA closer in the bottom of the 9th
(note: ERA, or earned run average, is the number of earned runs a pitcher has given up per nine innings they’ve pitched. an era of 12.5 would suggest they give up over a run per inning pitched, which is undesirable for any pitcher but is especially bad for, say, a closer whose job it is to protect close leads)
it would also suck for a starting pitcher who pitches a lot of innings though. i cannot emphasize enough that 12.5 ERA is abysmal dogshit and any pitcher who put up such a statline over any moderately sized sample would be thrown into a wood chipper
how do I maximize my wood chipper stat
