I think his point is that if he (as presumably a town member) got that, mafia could have gotten similar things.
I strongly agree that this isn’t a reason to discard mech entirely, but I understand his perspective here.

its not necessarily a bad thing.

it kinda shows me that if you can prove you have this ability that as a player you decided to forfeit one of your own abilities.

I understand that, but I don’t agree. That role is perfectly balanced as a town role, but would be unfun to play against as a mafia role. The fact that he has that as town is not at all an indicator of what the mafia might have.
