i dont think any of the observation level 1 info was remotely useful at all

which i recognize it generally wasn’t intended to be

but that probably contributed to how much everything felt out of town’s hands

So the tldr is Vibes.

But in general, you basically gotta ask yourself a few questions.

  1. How much death do players expect to be in this game when signing up?
  2. How many deaths should players expect on n1?
  3. How long should players expect the game to run?

The reason these factors are important is that you are making a game for players to enjoy, and you should be thinking about their expectations such that you can play with them. So, if you have a lobby full of boomers who like dayplay, you should have a low rate of death. If you have a game, like an anniversary game, where its about community and a lot of the game just wants to make it to d2, you should consider limiting how many players die on n1. And finally, how long should the game last? Well, that depends on the vibe of your game.

So you do a lil math. Lets say you want the game to enter “endgame” on d3-4, for something like a mash. You probably are killing about half of the each cycle, and can plan a killrate which facilitates that rate of death. Conversely, if its a more vanilla game, you’re probably looking at maybe a d6 endgame or so, and you scale the deaths such that fx lands on whichever day you are designating for your endgame.

In the end, its not a hard science, you can experiment with it, and you always have to be mindful of variance. What if people high roll? Low roll? You need to consider these outcomes because they can, often times, be the worst ones to play, so you might wanna take steps to mitigate that.

fwiw I liked the ideas you were going for this game like with noticing that silent orchestra also affects mafia so you decided to conceal the hint of how to identify the false feedback
