“I know Varl had some success petitioning him last year, and I think there was something with Mel’s family too… —Mel grew up closer to the baron, she only moved here when she married.”
“Well, of course not! He’s part of the Watch!” says the younger one.
“…Thank you for your. Time. Do you know where I can find them?”
I have to talk to more people.
“I worship all the righteous gods in their proper place,” he says. He pauses. “…I suppose that’s not literally true, I’m sure there are righteous gods up in Tian Xia that I’ve never heard of.”
(your impression is that he sincerely thinks that Tian Xia is north of his current location)
“They’ll both be out in the fields, but I can point them out to you.” He points out some very distant but still within your line of sight humans.
“…Mhm.”
I try to think of something smart and comforting to say to not just walk off. “I hope you have many days of… weal. Ahead.” That was neither.
I begin to walk to one of the people he pointed out.
Another approach.
“My apologies. I made certain assumptions regarding mal intent when you repeatedly suggested what seemed to me at the time to be a suicidal endeavor of going to the hospital without support.”
Stop pushing.
“Regarding help, though. An officer of the law would know the threat level associated with those who can cast Gaseous Form, right?”
Paprika turned to the other guard. “I believe your companion’s desire for righteous worship got ahead of him. He seems to have found the crime scene so disturbing he cleaned it up. I’m sure some gods out there found it admirable, but for me, it’s irritating.”
I. Wish I was able to. Say something about-..
I should just… I have more information to gather.
(which one do you want to talk to first?)
(she wouldn’t be able to give them specific names as the man didn’t name which is which, so… the one more to the left.)
“Of course. Someone casting that spell would certainly not be an inexperienced mage, but it’s hardly as difficult as, say, Teleport . But you all are quite experienced, aren’t you? Isn’t that why you’re here?”
“But that’s still illegal! He’s not a criminal.”

As you leave, you can hear the kid telling his dad about how “she’s NOT a dragon, but she STILL knows magic”.
…Anyways! The first one you approach turns out to be Varl; as expected, he’s currently planting his fields. He’s got a long scar across his face, and he’s starting to go bald.
“Hello there,” he says as you approach him. “You looking for something?”
(I accidentally failed to copy the first sentence from my word processer and it made the second one less coherent! fixed now)
“Uhm…” I’m… going to. Assume he’s Varl. Considering the names. And stuff. “I’m sorry, I’m, trying to.”
Breathe. In. Out. In. Out. “You had- petitioned the Baron. Last year.”
“…How was it? How did it. Go.”
“Regardless of assumptions of experience, a distinct request was made regarding assistance when handling that problem. No attempt was made after the initial refusal to determine the group’s abilities before suggesting that they handle the problem without assistance. This would appear to be negligence, strange for an experienced guard.”
“When a cultist breaks into a room to paint symbols, they have no desire to clean it up. Breaking in to hide the evidence would be strange: a second break-in only creates more, doesn’t it?”
Paprika made an “a implies b” gesture with her hands.
“So we’re looking for a righteous individual who accessed the crime scene to stymie the worship of an evil cult. Picking that lock and putting it right back on would take some talent, and I doubt our do-gooder has put time into that skill.”
“Somebody who hates cults and who could access the crime scene without lockpicking.” Head tilt. “I requested you leave the room in case it was your prescence making him too uncomfortable to admit this. It seems it wasn’t. Under Wanderer’s rather unsubtle threat of a truth spell, he professed himself to be no cultist, but ignored my questions as to whether the crime scene was accessed.”
