[RP] Play-By-Post Pathfinder

The drawing room is fairly small, but the walls are decorated with beautiful tapestries (doubling as insulation), depicting a series of scenes involving hunters defeating dangerous creatures, ranging from dire bears to a hydra to an allosaurus. A few mahogany couches with silk cushions are arranged around a low table. The same guard who was standing by the wall during supper follows him into the drawing room, standing unobtrusively against the wall.

The baron sits down on one of the armchairs, gesturing at you to take the others. As you take your seats, a servant refills your wine glasses before departing the room.

ā€œHow much do you know about the man who rules the lands to the east, Eskil Dalin?ā€ asks the baron, Avel Rodin.

Zelsh took a sip of his wine aft we r sitting down on one of the chairs. After all, there weren’t any threats to worry about here.

I awkwardly eye the glass because… I’m… not supposed to have alcohol. But I’m also supposed to… not refuse stuff from people of a higher class than me, and I’m… very certain the man with the title Baron is that and we’re not in some stranger’s house who’s masquerading as the baron.

…So I cup the glass between by two fingers, and let the thin long glass handle thing… hang in the air.

I’m pretty sure this isn’t how you’re meant to hold wine.

…

Oh! He asked a question! And it’s a simple answer so… now’s my time to look good!

…

Uhm.

(I’m rolling a lore check to figure out who the other Baron is.)

(+5 is 19.)

can I recall knowledge to see what I know about Baron Dalin

Yes, take a +4 circumstance bonus since you Literally Used To Work For His Father (and I guess technically worked for him too, briefly,)

in hindsight a rank in lore may have been helpful

That’s the asshole who fired you for no reason! Fuck that guy!

(you also know that he took power two years ago, after the death of his father)

(Would this be kn(local) or kn(nobility)?)

Unfortunately in high stress situations sometimes the details slip your mind. Or something.

ā€œBaron Dalin? Not… as much as I would like, unfortunately. I can tell you that he’s not exactly winning favors with his people, given in the two years after he has taken power, maintenance of the lands has been rather poor, and he’s taken it upon himself to remove various magistrates from positions of power as you may well be aware.ā€

ā€œThere are also… rumors circulating about. Apparently there have been cited disappearances of the man for days at a time. While I can’t verify these things myself, there is always that figment of truth in any rumor.ā€

Baron Eskil Dalin rules the lands to the east of the barony you’re currently in, including Granite Hill; north-to-south, his lands run from the edge of the forest (with the very edges being Technically Still His Territory, but mostly just in the sense that he theoretically controls hunting and logging rights there, not in the sense that he can actually e.g. collect taxes) to the Stetven River (technically stopping slightly north of the river itself). He took power two years ago, after the death of his father, and married shortly afterwards (on the late side for a nobleman). Your father’s milling-related privileges are technically derived from the baron, and although he would certainly never speak ill of him in public he’s expressed private concern about the thing where he fired a bunch of magistrates for no reason (because it suggests there’s a risk of him doing the same to your family).

Besides the complaints people have had about his performance (firing magistrates, failing to properly maintain the roads, conscripting more troops), you’ve also heard rumors that he’s rather inconsistent about hearing petitions — there were some acquaintances of your father who stayed at your home a few months back while travelling back from petitioning the baron, and he made them wait for multiple days for no clear reason.

(this was the subject of Assorted Rumors, although some people’s knowledge re: the actual situation is out of date/they don’t realize he’s already married)

You know what lands he nominally controls! (see above, I’m not retyping it,)
