“Hmmm, let me think.” She looks thoughtfully over an itemized list of equipment. “Do you prepare your spells each day, or choose flexibly in the moment which to cast?”
“Just think! Now you won’t have to worry about getting blood on your ancestral blade when you go into battle! You can punch them instead!”
Ancestral blade? Where did he get that idea from-
Oh.
“The former!”
Canary tries to speak in a hushed tone. “Do I look like I possess the force to do any damage with punching?” She’s trying to be more jokey than accusatory.
{Maybe saying that was a mistake.}
Drakor snapped his fingers. “Ah! But that’s the thing! Weapons are a force multiplier. Even a weakling- not that you’re weak- anyways, a less strong person can still do a lot of damage with a sword compared to an unarmed one.”
“And that’s why I think this one would suit you!” He held out the punch dagger in his hand. “During our earlier conversation you mentioned that you were unfamiliar with the weapons I carried. That’s fair - I don’t mean to presume, but it sounds like you don’t have much weapons training.”
“However! Everyone knows how to throw a punch!” He offered her the weapon. “This beauty will just make that punch deadlier.”
I look over at the… guy to see if he heard any of that.
“Alright, I’ve got good news for you.”
She carefully unlocks a chest and places a completely normal-looking pearl on the desk.
“You’re lucky this hasn’t already been handed out to some other caster, but I think it could do you a lot of good. This is a pearl of power. You use this, you can refill a first-circle* spell slot, just like you’ve never used it. It works once per day, so it can help you stretch your spells a bit farther. That seem like something you can use, or should I see what else we’ve got in stock?”
* first-level
He seems like he definitely heard that, yes.
“Nothing wrong with being specialized! It’s not just how many weapons you could use, it’s what you do with the weapons you do use.”
“This would appear to be useful, yes.”
More divination…
“Do you have any wands of cure light wounds?”
…How am I meant to get a… vaguely useful weapon with Drakor… he’d just correct me if I said I’m a… bow user.
He’s looking at his options but he’ll likely take the pearl.
“An excellent point!” Drakor said. “Of course, once you start being aware of the limitations of a given weapon, you can try something new to cover your weaknesses!”
He gestured to the warhammer, short sword, and sling hanging from his belt. “That’s why I’ve got such a variety.”
This is probably the most any of you have heard him talk.
“We do! One of the most useful wands out there, if you ask me, at least if you don’t truck with diabolists.”
He’s thinking. And thinking. Oh he’s saying nothing in front of this person for 30 seconds.
“How many things are we allowed to have?”
He nods in agreement. “For sure! No one wants to be stuck trying to fight a flying harpy with just a sword.”
He laughs at his own joke.
“Because the pearl would be useful, but the wand is also very useful.”
She runs a hand through her hair. “Speaking as the person in charge of making sure the estate’s finances work out nicely? I can offer you the pearl or a Cure wand, but not both. If you want the wand, I might be able to throw in a couple consumables I doubt we’ll be using.”
(this is much more blunt than most people would be)
“Or if you’ve got another caster like you I could do one for each of you," she adds.
“…I’ll go with the Pearl.”
Drakor laughed with him. “Right?”
He held up his sling. “This thing has gotten me out of trouble at least five times. Of course, it’s also gotten me in trouble more times than I can count, but that’s just life.”
He looked back at Canary. “So? Anything catch your eye? That longspear looks like it’s calling you.”
