“Of course! Four crowns, five if you want a fancy binding. I can have it ready for pickup this evening, unless you want the fancy binding.”

She retrieves the display copy for her own use in copying it.

“As for books on jewelry value… I don’t think we’ve got anything quite that specialized, but I do have a copy of some of the latest broadsheets from New Stetven, and the Abadarans have one that prints the prices of various goods? But I’m not sure how much it has to say about gemstones, since they can be so varied…”

(if not, is there a book here that focuses more on bloodlines?)

“And why’s that?” he asks suspiciously.

“I’ll go without the fancy binding. Could I have a look at the history book?”

well shit

…Kind of. It includes a note of spells that have been known to be cast by sorcerers that (as far as the author knows) can’t be cast by wizards, which you’d expect to correspond to bloodline spells? But it doesn’t include details about specific bloodlines.

Besides the already-mentioned books, your best resource on bloodlines would probably be one of the more general-purpose magical texts, which is mostly about different traditions of wizardry but also includes a long chapter discussing different sorcerous bloodlines the author has heard of, albeit not always in as much detail as might ideally be useful.

Canary takes a deep breath, puts the book she had held back, and waits in line behind Rika.

(She’s going to attempt to purchase the Mostly Wizardry book)

“For sure!”

The history book seems to be incredibly dry, but the factual grounding of the book seems solid. It does include some discussion of gemstone prices, but mostly in a historical context, so it might not be an incredibly useful reference text for contemporary valuations.

“I am a priest of Pulura. We staunchly oppose demons and their ilk. I had overheard that it appeared that there was a symbol of a demon lord spotted there.” He speaks with confidence.

Any mention of Icerime amethyst?

Regardless of this, Paprika will put the book back and pay for the mystery novel.

She looks at the book you’ve selected. “Six crowns, seven if you want a nice binding. I can’t finish both of these by this evening, but I can have yours ready by mid-morning tomorrow if you’d like.”

“You can delay the mystery novel.”

This may be the greatest sacrifice Paprika’s made in her life.

I. Nod. and try not to think about how much work it is whilst I pass her the money.

I gaze at Rika with a ‘I would heavily prefer you to not delay the mystery novel’ look…

…But nothing is going to change that.

“Ugh, have our people been gossiping again ?” he mutters, mostly to himself.

He straightens up. “I can see about getting you access, but you’ll be strictly supervised, do you understand?”

“What, would you like to read it?” Paprika spoke a bit quietly.

I- as politely as I can muster- shake my head.

I’d just… strongly prefer if she didn’t set things aside for me.

“Understood!” He attempts to stand at attention.

Yes, towards the end of the book. Icerime amethyst was discovered in the Icerime Peaks, which mark the border between Brevoy and Iobaria to the east. It was known in ancient times (though not by that name), but accounts of it were widely believed to be exaggerated descriptions of regular amethyst until it was rediscovered a little over a century ago by a mining expedition sponsored by House Rogarvia. It’s known for its exceptional dark-purple hue, and has since become highly prized among the nobility of Brevoy. As of the book’s printing, it’s currently out of fashion in Taldor, where the book’s author apparently resides, due to its association with Brevoy (the author doesn’t say this explicitly, but you get the vibe that Taldans think of Brevoy as kind of a backwater), but at other times it’s been viewed in Taldor as a Cool Foreign Gemstone We Don’t Get Around Here and prized for that reason as a status symbol.

“Well, I can do them in either order, just as long as I know which! Or if you’d rather save on the trips you can just pick them both up tomorrow morning.”

He goes inside, but returns a couple minutes later. “They don’t want to make the trip now when it’s already so late, but if you come by tomorrow morning someone can escort you.”
