wtf is a combat maneuver?

Combat maneuvers are basically a special type of action people can take to do various things that are kind of like attacking, but don’t deal damage. Some examples (not a comprehensive list) include Trip (knock an opponent prone), Disarm (what it sounds like), and Bull Rush (move an opponent backwards).

By default, using a combat maneuver provokes an attack of opportunity from the target of your maneuver. However, each maneuver has an associated feat, called “Improved [the name of the maneuver” (e.g. “Improved Trip”), which makes it so that your combat maneuver doesn’t provoke an AOO. In this case, Rafau has Improved Trip, so he did not provoke an AOO from Drakor.

The bonus to your attack roll when making a combat maneuver is called your CMB (combat maneuver bonus), and it is equal to your BAB + your strength modifier + your special size modifier + any other applicable modifiers. Unlike a normal attack roll, larger creatures get a bonus to CMB and smaller creatures get a penalty, rather than the reverse. Most bonuses and penalties that apply to attack rolls still apply to combat maneuvers, as they are technically a type of attack roll. Natural 20s are a guaranteed success (with like one exception), whereas Natural 1s are a guaranteed failure.

Rather than resolving against AC, combat maneuvers resolve against CMD (combat maneuver defense). CMD is equal to 10 + BAB + Str mod + Dex mod + special size modifier + any other applicable modifiers. Most bonuses to AC, apart from the kind that actually come from armor or shields, also apply to CMD — for example, Drakor’s bonus from Fighting Defensively still applied to CMD.

Many combat maneuvers also have additional rules that apply to that specific maneuver, but since there are a lot of them, I am not going to list them all.

It’s hard to be certain how honest he’s being — he’s literally attacking you, so any assertions he makes are kind of suspect by default, but that doesn’t necessarily guarantee that he’s exclusively telling lies.

(What skill would be used to try to bait rafau into monologuing?)

(I think… Bluff or Diplomacy?)

“How did you receive the tip? Is there anybody who knows?”

“Huh. Good question.” He thinks about it for a moment. “I wasn’t there, but I bet someone back at headquarters knows. You all done here?”

(Is there enough time in this round for Drakor to speak or should i wait for zelsh’s action?)

“I am satisfied for now.” Paprika nodded seriously.

(hmmm, I’ll allow it in this case)

“I believe so.”

“Come now, be reasonable. Even if you win this fight, my companions will know something is amiss. Surely the fallout from attacking two innocents is greater than some mere cult activity?” Drakor was breathing heavily, but tried to project confidence.

The breathing and the visible blood did not help his case.

((For the love of Irori, yes please!))

Rika, Wanderer, Arius, and presumably Lionel, along with Valtyr the younger watchman, make your way back to the Watch headquarters. The really buff guy from earlier is back outside; he has once again gotten distracted by the local wildlife, but straightens up when you get close enough for him to notice you.

“Right, wait out here,” says Valtyr. He makes for the entrance.

Wanderer stands there, peacefully.

In truth he is quite happy that his theory appears wrong. It being wrong means he doesn’t have to do something distasteful.

Despite the dubious quality of your bluff, he seems to be genuinely worried about your threat. “Do you really think the Watch will demand a full investigation just on the vague suspicions of a few newcomers? If they had seen something, that would be one thing, but once you’ve been dealt with…” He spreads his arms. “…who’s to say what happened?”
