Over the course of the next few hands, Drekor proves himself both skilled and lucky – he draws good cards, manages to hide it well enough to get people to bet against him, and catches on to the other players’ tells well enough to fold. He comes away with four bits of profit. The previous most winning player still manages to do acceptably, mostly by virtue of being better than most of his tablemates at cutting his losses, and comes away a single bit richer.
The player who was previously insulting draws some lucky hands, but can’t help but give away when he has a good hand; he still earns enough from the ante to balance out his losses, but he’s not doing better than breaking even. Arius has apparently learned from his mistakes, and manages to avoid losing more than a single bit. And the no-longer-newest-arrival manages to lose four bits just from a few rounds of play, and ends up staring mildly distraught at his cards.
“How did you do that?” says the loser.
(That feeling when both bluff and sense motive are class skill)
“But if you tell him I tipped you off, he’ll be mad at me.” He stares down at the ground. “If you’re so good at talking to people, maybe you could come up with some other excuse?”
He’ll humor him.
What could he come up with as a reasonable excuse?
(I guess I’m asking to roll bluff?)
Drakor tapped his hood knowingly. “I did warn you.”
[Well, the basic problem is even if you had a good excuse for disapproving of the baron (not necessarily hard to come by), you wouldn’t necessarily know to approach him without Savil’s help, right? So if you could find out more details about Messire Kaver, that could potentially help you come up with an excuse (if your character would have reason to know that he’s opposed to the baron) – but it also might not, if Kaver has kept his motivations secret enough (and you can probably assume Savil doesn’t know anything that would make it easy, or he’d have had a better suggestion for you). Conversely, you could represent yourself as someone who’s independently interested in going after the baron, who’s recruiting allies and thought that Kaver seemed competent/important/etc.; he sure seems to think of himself that way, regardless of whether he in fact is. (But, of course, you might think of something even better.)]
[I think I’m inclined to have the actual bluff roll be when/if you end up pitching Messire Kaver on any specific claim?]
Projecting confidence he does not have whatsoever, he asks where Kaver is.
“Aye. That, ye did.” Arius said lightheartedly. He raised both his hands in defeat.
((Not sure where to go from here. If it’s getting late, then Arius will probably go to bed to sleep.))
The previous winner grins. “Hey, I’ll get you next time.”
The guy who just lost four bits winces. “I should really stop for the evening, I’ve lost so much already…”
“Gotta get all the bad luck out of the way first, right?” says the no-longer-winningest guy.
The losingest guy sucks in a breath through his teeth. “Maybe you’re right, but I just don’t know… I mean, Tam’s already going to be pretty mad at me…”
“Not if you win it back, right?”
“I guess that makes sense, yeah.”
[It’s getting pretty late, yeah]
“He’s back in the rectory. We’re staying there for the night.”
“Alright.”
He cracks his knuckles.
“I’ll head over there immediately.”
He does (?) that
(Same with Drakor)
Savil looks pretty upset about this, but he doesn’t actually try to prevent you.
The temple (and attached rectory) are still in the same place they were previously. Despite the late hour, there’s still someone getting water from the cistern; she nods goodnight at you as she leaves. Agneta herself is busy refilling the cistern with castings of Create Water , while her husband rearranges the benches.
