“Very well,” Arius smiles slightly. “That will be all for now. I hope you’d pardon the next visitors, as they will probably ask you the same questions I asked.” He then bows his head, and exits the forge.

Once outside, he immediately drags Vin a distance away from the forge. “Hey Vin, come with me for a second will ya?”

When Arius is certain that neither Sten nor Kamilla could hear him, he asks: “Do you remember where your family members were last night?”

(Yes)

Her silence is certainly due to the obvious reasons, yes. But it’s also a strategy. She’s staying silent in hopes that this’ll eventually blow over without her having to do anything.

(Never mind not your call)

(i assumed due to you bringing up the +1 Drakor could’ve had last time, info is in my prev message)

He blinks. “Uh, I dunno. We ate dinner, I guess we were at the house for that. Dad was really mad about that rich guy who was visiting.” He frowns. “I guess Kamilla went to see a friend after dinner? But she was only gone a few minutes. And then we all went to bed.”

Arius nods as he listens to Vin. “I see… Thanks for helping me out.” He pats the young man’s shoulder. “By the way, you might get some visitors soon who will ask you the same thing.”

…and then Arius simply walks away in the direction of the general store to see if anyone else got any better leads.

((I assume now is when he will notice the incoming militia.))

Drakor continued to talk. “If you want me to leave, ask. If my prescence is bothering you, simply tell me. But if you do not, I will sit here with you and wait.”

Canary looks to the side as Drakor visibly sets in for the long haul.

“…”

“Do you know what it’s like? To be a martyr?”

As you’re heading back to the general store, you encounter a group of three people — Wanderer, the one you’d been suspicious of, accompanied by Leta Flintbeard and two militia members. You’re still not far from the forge, though far enough to be out of view.

Meanwhile, Wanderer sees Arius heading in a direction roughly consistent with someone leaving the forge (or Sten’s house, or one of the other houses in the area).

Drakor turned his head to face her. “I am familiar with the term. But I cannot say that I have experienced it.”

“It’s just that…” Canary tries her legs, but they’re clearly not working. “…Lots of people have potential. Have hope. Not for something they’re designed to, but… they have the ability to. Well.”

“…At least die in their own way.”

“Someone who’s destined to be a martyr doesn’t really get any of that.”

She’s talking about herself. Evidently.

He unslung his pack and moved his gloves from his belt to the pack. “Might I ask why you feel that way?”

“It’s what I have been told, that’s… who I will be. Because someone a long time ago was it, and now… I am. I will die for something important. And I don’t get a choice in that.”

“So I have to push myself. I need to… do a lot of things. I need to be the type of person who’s… worthy of that. Role.”

You get the feeling she isn’t being entirely candid, especially towards how she’s feeling right now, but that’s certainly part of it.

(Huh… That’s Wanderer with… the militia? Well the militia surely can’t be corrupt, so I guess the half-orc really isn’t the primary suspect…)

The mercenary squints his eyes. (I suppose I will have to trust him for the time being…)

He stands still, waiting for the four to reach him, before sharing the information he had just learned. “Despite some oddities with the family’s behavior, I think the blacksmith’s daughter is genuinely innocent from this murder case.”
