Given my LGS experiences with D&D, I would say that 5e is undeniably effective at holding attention due to traits entirely unrelated to the underlying systems

fwiw a fair bit of the fun of buildcrafting in DnD is non-strictly-combat stuff
sometimes including how you can use it in combat lol 
but also sometimes avoiding combat entirely through smart ability usage is more enjoyable than pure dice rolling
