Commas, em dashes, and parentheses can all be used interchangeably for parenthetical asides and grammatically there’s no difference between them, but there is a rhetorical difference. I’m making this point clumsily, but what I’m trying to say is that intention does not dictate when commas are and are not grammatically valid. If you have multiple acceptable choices then which you use is purely rhetorical.
“My sister, Alice, is…”
“My sister Alice is…”
Those two sentences are conveying different meanings about the speaker. In the first example, the speaker has 1 sister (Alice). In the second, the speaker has multiple sisters, and one of them is named Alice. Commas aren’t just vibes.
