Are there people who have an inherently really shitty personality and hurt those around them without having a mental illness, or is every source of this mental illness? Genuine question, im curious. You can easily say what you speculate but I’m interested if there’s scientific answer (and not speculation)

happy birthday ruby!

From what I can remember from a coursera social psychology course. It’s that this usually is caused by a negative feedback loop, if you are a normal person doing something immoral, the more you do it, the less it ā€œstinksā€ until you feel that it’s part of normal reality (consequences are always important for stopping bad behavior), an example they gave here is that Enron (an oil company) heavily incentivized unethical practices from its employees and constantly had to compete against one another to not get fired.

People can be by-products of their time, what people often miss is that people tend to copy each other and something immoral can easily just be a common normal way of life for them. (ā€œWomen usually get beaten, it’s the only way a guy remains in control.ā€, ā€œThe Bible says that it’s okay to enslave and treat slaves like property.ā€) or you are forced to be immoral because of societal pressure or somebody above you who has power over you if you disobey (ā€œI will be thought a traitor if I don’t kill innocent enemy civiliansā€).

There’s certain people who tend to operate on this feeling of empowerment/vulnerability (like picking on the weak), this can also be expressed of projecting your own past or your insecurities onto others that will mentally justify being more of a prick (ā€œI must be violent so I don’t become a victim againā€, ā€œwomen are materialistic creatures who only deserve the worst like my ex, I will put them in their placeā€).

The major problem with people acting terrible is that, I feel they tend to easily dehumanize one another so they won’t care if bad things happen to them, also people, for diverse reasons, usually seem to be more inconsiderate and think worse of strangers overall until they get to know them.

Empathy and compassion, generally, is something available to everyone, children display this more easily but as they grow up, depending on their social environment they can grow to be less kind. If people would be more respectful and find more ways to help each other, cooperate and just not be a prick overall, I’m sure that people will be more warm towards one another.

But I think the main driver behind crappy personalities, is that these people don’t know how to cope with stress and being miserable so, either consciously or subconsciously, they do it towards others and it will cause this loop of aggressively where nobody is left particularly happy long-term. The more people become more aware of emotional intelligence, proper coping mechanisms, learn to be socialized correctly and just be more happy and unstressed, I’m sure it will cause a more happier world.

I don’t think anyone grows with innate bad qualities and everyone can learn to be more stable, unless it’s something rare like genes causing somebody to be a vicious psychopath, but that’s still pretty rare.

The more bitter somebody acts towards somebody, they will become even bitter as a person.

The more friendly somebody acts towards somebody, they will become even friendly as a person.

Isn’t that a positive feedback loop?
