There’s actually a novel based around this conceit, Tender is the Flesh by Agustina Bazterrica (I think it’s actually become decently popular recently). The premise is that there’s a virus that has rendered animal meat unsafe for consumption, and as a result cannibalism is now legalized.

I don’t even know what it’s called. There’s like those bumps in your shoulder that creates that painful sensation and if they’re small enough you can make them dissapear by massaging.

When it comes to something like subsistence hunting or cannibalism in lieu of starving, I think the moral/ethical calculus does change. IIRC there are native tribes on reservations that still practice subsistence hunting (out of necessity), and it’s not amoral or unethical to do what you have to to survive. Most Americans, however, do have a choice. Having a choice and choosing to eat meat anyway is when the moral and ethical problems start.

so what’s the scoop on vegetarians then

I’m not too much of a meat guy. Though does KFC put me on a That Vegan Teacher hitlist?

i feel as though the moral dilemma has less impact when you aren’t the one performing the kill but maybe that’s just a me thing

for unnecessary hunting sure but nowadays meat is harvested in industrial quantities and, as far as i’m aware, often in excess
at the level at which modern corporations function it would take an extreme shift in demand for them to consider the significant cost of scaling production and whether or not you specifically eat meat will not even be registered as a decimal point on a graph

if i were to, say, take my shotgun and go shoot a deer for dinner that could be considered immoral
but a store bought steak has already been killed and butchered a long time ago by someone else
