fair fair
It adds to it in theory but subtracts from it in practice.
It helps sell the idea of, âThese people have zero regard for appearing polite to the outside world because theyâve already been judged and know that if anyoneâs down in Hell, theyâve done some nasty things,â thus establishing the moral framework of Hell.
That said, itâs also being overused to the point of being a crutch, and the show fails to view its swears as an actual writing tool versus just being quick humor.
(This is also a problem Iâm having while currently watching The Boys, albeit less so given that the show seems more aware of the shortcomings of its original material.)
(Thereâs also probably some interesting things to read into regarding the relationship of Vivziepopâs work to religion, but Iâm not clever enough to make those jumps.)
i mean i said somewhat. I personally dont like it and its part of why I dont love vivziepop shows but thereâs a justification for âexcessive cursing in a show about literal demons in hellâ where thereâs not for âhomesuckâ
I honestly think its more of a problem in the boys. Like it makes vivziepop stuff worse but im ngl thereâs not that much there to be really bogged down by the excessive cursing
whereas the boys is full of some really great characters, moments, settings soundtracks etc. etc. which makes it good enough for me to really want to watch the next episode
but then like 1/2 of the show is âguys look at this weird sex thing that this superhero does. Isnât that crazy? Like usually superheroes are sanitized good guys so isnt it so funny they do weird sex stuff???â
you can say its aware of its original materials shortcomings but at the same time its biggest downfall is the exact same as the comics biggest downfall: spending too much time gratuitously portraying superheroes being weird for shock value
the boys spoilers
Season villain starts with security footage
âHoly shit is that fookinâ Lamplighter/Liberty(Stromfront)/Soldier Boy/Sister Sage?? Whatâre they doing here!?!?â
âLetâs blackmail them!â âOh fuck it didnât workâŚâ
MM:
Wife: âYou need to fix this, Marvin! For your baby girlâ
MM: âBut muh anxietyâ
Butcher:
âOi we need to kill âomelandahâ
âOh hell no, no way weâre bringing you backâ
âShit guys, maybe we need ButcherâŚâ
Butcher returns
Frenchie:
âI am le sad because I le killed people. Now time to self destruct with drugsâ
Kimiko:
âI am sad because Frenchie is sad.â Also human trafficking plot that goes nowhere
Homelander:
âOoooo im gonna lose it! Any minute now Iâm gonna start killing everyone. Better keep watching until I do! Itâs gonna be soon, I swear!â
Hughie:
human punching bag
Donât forget the classic. âGuys we gotta infiltrate this thing, even though itâs extremely dangerous and we always get caughtâ
âWtf Homelander is here! How can this be!!â
âWe gotta get out of here!!â
cue The Boys barely escaping with at least 2 death fakeouts and 2 characters conveniently running into each other for a conversation
Vivzie stuff is typically in the difficult position of being just okay in a space where a lot of people have strong feelings about it
Vivzieâs skill as a writer is also inconsistent, which makes the aforementioned problem worse
This pilot is uh
Iâm not a fan
yeah hard agree with this
sometimes it works but often it doesnât
a big part of why ive bounced off of gen v in particular so hard
i dont like gen v
tbh I think peak boys was like
early S1 hiding invisibro and s2 courthouse
and weâve never really recaptured the immense sense of dread that those seasons were so good at instilling, with those as the highlights
Iâm gonna be real, Iâm halfway through S2, and I was really hoping the show gets better from there.
Its not like it falls off a cliff
But I think the highest points are in the first two seasons
Ok
At least the visual gags were good
The swearing genuinely made every dialogue worse
the boys spoilers
Trueee. Homelander was an intelligent and cunning villain in s1 and s2. Then, the writers started milking the show and they did a âflanderizationâ of homelander
i liked the phone call visuals
that is⌠the nicest thing i have to say
I think my main problem with The Boys at the moment is that it revels in its cynicism, the idea that Vought can shut down everything and blackmail everyone and get away with every single awful thing they do, and it seems to feel that said cynicism is meaningful in and of itself.
