fair fair

It adds to it in theory but subtracts from it in practice.
It helps sell the idea of, “These people have zero regard for appearing polite to the outside world because they’ve already been judged and know that if anyone’s down in Hell, they’ve done some nasty things,” thus establishing the moral framework of Hell.
That said, it’s also being overused to the point of being a crutch, and the show fails to view its swears as an actual writing tool versus just being quick humor.

(This is also a problem I’m having while currently watching The Boys, albeit less so given that the show seems more aware of the shortcomings of its original material.)
(There’s also probably some interesting things to read into regarding the relationship of Vivziepop’s work to religion, but I’m not clever enough to make those jumps.)

i mean i said somewhat. I personally dont like it and its part of why I dont love vivziepop shows but there’s a justification for “excessive cursing in a show about literal demons in hell” where there’s not for “homesuck”

I honestly think its more of a problem in the boys. Like it makes vivziepop stuff worse but im ngl there’s not that much there to be really bogged down by the excessive cursing

whereas the boys is full of some really great characters, moments, settings soundtracks etc. etc. which makes it good enough for me to really want to watch the next episode

but then like 1/2 of the show is “guys look at this weird sex thing that this superhero does. Isn’t that crazy? Like usually superheroes are sanitized good guys so isnt it so funny they do weird sex stuff???”

you can say its aware of its original materials shortcomings but at the same time its biggest downfall is the exact same as the comics biggest downfall: spending too much time gratuitously portraying superheroes being weird for shock value

the boys spoilers

Season villain starts with security footage

“Holy shit is that fookin’ Lamplighter/Liberty(Stromfront)/Soldier Boy/Sister Sage?? What’re they doing here!?!?”

“Let’s blackmail them!” “Oh fuck it didn’t work…”

MM:

Wife: “You need to fix this, Marvin! For your baby girl”

MM: “But muh anxiety”

Butcher:

“Oi we need to kill ‘omelandah”

“Oh hell no, no way we’re bringing you back”

“Shit guys, maybe we need Butcher…”

Butcher returns

Frenchie:

“I am le sad because I le killed people. Now time to self destruct with drugs”

Kimiko:

“I am sad because Frenchie is sad.” Also human trafficking plot that goes nowhere

Homelander:

“Ooooo im gonna lose it! Any minute now I’m gonna start killing everyone. Better keep watching until I do! It’s gonna be soon, I swear!”

Hughie:

human punching bag

Don’t forget the classic. “Guys we gotta infiltrate this thing, even though it’s extremely dangerous and we always get caught”

“Wtf Homelander is here! How can this be!!”

“We gotta get out of here!!”

cue The Boys barely escaping with at least 2 death fakeouts and 2 characters conveniently running into each other for a conversation

Vivzie stuff is typically in the difficult position of being just okay in a space where a lot of people have strong feelings about it

Vivzie’s skill as a writer is also inconsistent, which makes the aforementioned problem worse

tbh I think peak boys was like

early S1 hiding invisibro and s2 courthouse

and we’ve never really recaptured the immense sense of dread that those seasons were so good at instilling, with those as the highlights

I’m gonna be real, I’m halfway through S2, and I was really hoping the show gets better from there.

Its not like it falls off a cliff

But I think the highest points are in the first two seasons

Ok
At least the visual gags were good
The swearing genuinely made every dialogue worse

Trueee. Homelander was an intelligent and cunning villain in s1 and s2. Then, the writers started milking the show and they did a “flanderization” of homelander

i liked the phone call visuals

that is… the nicest thing i have to say

I think my main problem with The Boys at the moment is that it revels in its cynicism, the idea that Vought can shut down everything and blackmail everyone and get away with every single awful thing they do, and it seems to feel that said cynicism is meaningful in and of itself.
