if you were in like history or some other field that interfaces with old manuscripts more often id say go for it but as a senior yeah take stuff thats like actively helpful lol
id prob take it but thats cause im a filthy humanities major

i could argue that it could be useful for a lawyer or someone interfacing with the law (reading old ass statues and cases) but anthing that old to be useful has likely been converted to readable form already

Itâs a very specialist niche, youâd only really use it for deeds and other oddly specific documents, but there are firms out there which have their entire job as doing that for law firms
Case law is pretty much all digitised in Lexis or Westlaw
Mostly an academic thing where you are much more likely to be exposed to Odd Documents by choice

there are specialties where it would be helpful (like Ishmael, I was thinking of history), just, I donât think Gummy has such a specialty, and itâs not the sort of class Iâd expect to be Fun and Interesting
(well, you might get to look at cool old documents? but there are probably more interesting classes that would also allow you to do this)

Digitalization of law is so, so important. And not just in the transcribing of paper into digital format
For example LexisNexis which is the other main legal database for searching cases were like ~1.5 years slower than Reuters to modernize their UI which essentially alienated me from ever using their database and old habits die hard so even though theyâve had a makeover I still use Westlaw just because Iâm used to it
On a similar note Iâm slightly thankful on this occasion the legal profession leans conservative because it means theyâre like, the one major digital service I use that hasnât attempted to throw generative AI in somewhere that itâs absolutely not helpful

biased-history-major take here but I think there are almost certainly some cool history electives you could sign up for, just, not the one where the focus of the course is on, like, reading illegible handwriting and deciphering abbreviations that were standard several hundred years ago and so on

do you have friends in the major? my honest recommendation would be to ask them who the most interesting professors are and then sign up for something taught by one of the people they recommend
(if not you can also just go based on which topics sound interesting, like it sounds like you were planning to)

tbf i think the focus of the course is âmanuscript studyâ and i was unnecessarily reductive in my estimation of it lol
