Yeah it’s a way to distance yourself from the opinion you’re saying a bit. It serves a purpose sourcing from its definition. That purpose is not necessarily its definition but there’s not especially some other word you can say that is defined as “the following opinion is casual and not something I would commit to an argument about:” other than literally writing those words out, which takes a while and has a completely different tone

I think that words-as-used-in-practice are often a lot more complicated and subtle and useful and useful than the dictionary definitions would give, and there’d be a significant hit to communication ability if we were to all stick to the denotations and not the connotations.
The majority of times I see people claim “everybody uses this word wrong to mean the opposite of what it means, causing communication issues”, they are flattening out nuance and strooongly misunderstanding what is actually being said.
Common example: “literally” isn’t used to mean “figuratively”, it’s being used as an intensifier/hyperbole, the same way “really” and “truly” and “very” all mean both “actually” and “extremely”. It’s a consistent, studyable pattern, and people want to litigate “literally” away from this role while keeping the words whose definition drifted long ago enough that it doesn’t bother anyone anymore.
Ultimately, the process of language drifting and words acquiring subtler meanings than their official definitions would accommodate is unstoppable, you are using products of it constantly, it is a natural consequence of how people learn to speak (which is by hearing a bunch of words used in practice and acquiring an empirical vibe of how they’re used; few, if any, learn words primarily through the dictionary).
I think that “language acquires meaning through how it’s used, not through a dictionary or authority setting it so” is, like, an unarguable fact. It doesn’t really matter whether or not it ought to be the case, I think it is impossible to get everybody on the same page about the exact meanings of every word and have them stay limited to that.

And it makes things harder sometimes, if you’re autistic or learning a foreign language and you have to contend with a million empirically-derived complexities instead of speaking Lojban and having easy-to-follow rules about how to communicate what you want. But it is reality and good luck getting it to change

Example of my kinda-nonconfrontationalness you all don’t believe in. I knew specifically Daeron was in law school and I was confident in this. But I really hate correcting people if I am not 99.5% confident, so I softened my statement 100\times to avoid a situation where I would put myself out there and be wrong

The main time I view you as being confrontational I see of you is when you are angry, as of almost everyone else. I doubt people view you as your most exaggerated features.

I guess my point is that non-confrontationalness of this type is one of my most exaggerated features, to a ridiculous extent, that doesn’t show a ton online.
