Forgive me but I’m Star Wars pilled. The Destiny Point system is my favorite metacurrency that I’ve played with. Inspiration is just so rarely given out in 5e that it might as well not exist. Hero points in PF2E fix that issue because everyone starts with one at the beginning of the session.

Destiny points are a pool of lightside (used by players) and darkside points (used by the GM) that are determined by rolls at the beginning of the session. Using a lightside point converts it into a darkside point, and vice versa. They can be spent to upgrade a skill for a check or increase the difficulty of someone else’s check (and the difference is considerably more marginal than something like advantage would be). However, you can also use them to just say something happens. I’ve used them to say that my character has a good relationship with an NPC, so they’d be okay with my character hiding in a room behind the bar, or to say that one of the boxes next to me in the bounty hunter’s hideout has some grenades in it.

And it’s been useful as a pretext for the GM to add more tension into a scene like we were trying to break into a building, and the GM flipped a darkside point after a failed check to say that someone turned down the alley we were in. A GM doesn’t need a metacurrency to do something like that, but I think it feels somehow more fair when there’s a literal pool of ā€œI can fuck with youā€ points that we, as the players, usually provides to the GM by making something good happen for the party. There are also abilities that are really powerful that use destiny points as a way to limit their use to appropriate moments. I think it being a shared pool for everyone that changes hands rather than depletes makes everyone more willing to use them to tip the scales throughout the course of the session while still remaining thoughtful.
