In hindsight it doesn’t have wnough typos
I understood that immediately
it’s really easy. if you rand PR then every day is shut the fuck up Friday. if you rand wolf then you need to figure who doesn’t know it’s shut the fuck up Friday
Ugh but we’re so bad at shutting up
It’s not guaranteed (obviously) but pretty much all of the most fuel-efficient four-door cars have historically been hatchbacks
and to be clear its not 100% aero, there are also weight advantages, but fundamentally they can balance those factors for easier access to crazy high fuel efficiency than most other car styles have been able to historically
id be shocked if hatchbacks were more aerodynamic than coupes for example but i feel like thats a different category and even then usually they aren’t getting better fuel efficiency irl
if u find a sedan with 60+ mpg then by all means go with that over a hatchback
but (excluding MPG-e ratings which are useful but fake) you probably won’t
mods can we ban him for linking to tvtropes
fundamentally tho a good hatchback will have a comparable A to a sedan but a lower Cd
low-Cd sedans start to look an awful lot like hatchbacks xdd
90% of champs towns stop one pr exe before they finally hit a wolf this time guys
so in essence yes people are correct that in theory a hatchback has worse aero than an exactly equal in every other way sedan
the issue is that irl a whole host of other variables are at play and rarely do sedans actually get measurable benefit because they aren’t exactly equal in every other way
so
like check out modern elantras for a good example of what i mean
they shape their trunk in an extremely hatchback-y way but still end up getting worse fuel efficiency than my four-year-old hatchback by the same company
smh benguin, we had an entire FAM role about this,
the gap is closing but it still exists
and mind you for that better fuel efficiency i also get a ton more storage space thats way easier to access
kinda just a win on all counts for the hatchback
I prefer the random bullshit route (see: Grand Idea Thread)
i should know firsthand that fam roles do not necessarily represent the person they’re built off of
The only scholarly source I found did find that hatchbacks had worse aerodynamics. Anyway, it seems like there are other factors that are more significant. I looked through the Hyundai EV line (since an Ioniq 6 is still my frontrunner), and the 4 models I’m comparing are:
- 2025 Kona (“small” SUV), 261 miles (EPA-est. range)
- 2025 Ioniq 5 (SUV), 318 miles
- 2025 Ioniq 5 N (“high-performance” SUV), 221 miles
- 2025 Ioniq 6 (sedan), 342 miles
- 2026 Ioniq 9 (3-row SUV, easily the biggest vehicle), 335 miles (there’s no 2025 model)
The Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 5 N have what appears to be an identical body, and just punts 100 miles of range to make it “track-ready” and “fun-to-drive”. The range differences between the Kona and Ioniq 5/6, and the similarities between the 5/6 and the 9 are probably all battery size if I had to guess. Anyway either the aerodynamics don’t matter all that much (since the larger 5 also has more weight to contend with) or the larger size of the vehicle allows the deficit to be compensated. I’m also a car idiot, and an SUV isn’t a hatchback in the way you’re referring to (even though it does have a hatchback), but I didn’t have a better comparison on hand and don’t care that much.
